On Tuesday evening, July 14th, at 7:30 p.m., SMfG will present The Harlem Quartet.

The Grammy-winning Harlem Quartet, featuring Ilmar Gavilán, Melissa White, Jaime Amador, and Felix Umansky, has earned acclaim for its dynamic performances and fresh approach to classical music. The New York Times has praised the quartet’s “panache,” while the Cincinnati Enquirer lauded its “new attitude to classical music, one that is fresh, bracing and intelligent.” The quartet has performed on four continents and in 47 states and on television programs such as the Today Show and News Hour and has performed for first lady Michelle Obama at the White House. It is best known for its innovative programming, which seamlessly mixes classical repertoire with jazz and Latin.

The acclaimed Boston-based jazz ensemble The Ellington Collective – which performed to an enthusiastic, near-capacity SMfG audience here last summer – returns to perform another tribute to the timeless genius of Duke Ellington and his music, this one highlighting the Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Latino influences in Ellington’s music with fresh, soulful and rhythmic renditions of Ellington’s most iconic compositions like Take the A Train, Caravan, In a Sentimental MoodDon’t Get Around Much AnymoreI Let a Song Out of My Heart, Creole Love SongJeeps BluesPrelude to a Kiss, and Sophisticated Lady. The band delivers a dynamic, soulful performance that blends rich harmonies, infectious rhythms, and inspired improvisation – offering audiences a fresh and exhilarating perspective on Ellington’s enduring legacy. Classical jazz at its very best!

Saxophonists Dan Moretti and Greg Abate, trombonist Jeff Galindo, Marty Ballou on bass, Tim Ray on piano, and Marty Richards on drums.

Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play features three outstanding and versatile musicians: Grammy award-winner Peter ‘Madcat’ Ruth (on harmonica, jaw harp, guitar, percussion, and vocals), Joel Brown (folk and classical acoustic guitar and vocals), and Chris Brubeck (electric bass, bass trombone, piano and vocals). Collectively, they bring a rare level of joy, virtuosity, and American spirit to the folk, blues, jazz, and classical music they perform. The trio’s musical roots go back nearly 40 years. Chris and Madcat have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969, first as young rock musicians in the group New Heavenly Blue and then as jazz musicians touring the world with Chris’ father, the legendary jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck.

Its powerful energy and captivating, cohesive sound, distinguished by “warmth of phrasing, dynamic control and superbly coordinated ensemble balance” (Gramophone Magazine), has solidified the ensemble as one of the most essential voices in American chamber music.
